Cranes, Dunes and Lava
Five Days: Jan. 14-18, 2007
$1495 per person

New Mexico Au Natural
New Mexico is indeed an enchanted land. We’ll capture some of that magic on digital film during our winter outdoor photography course, Cranes, Dunes and Lava. To photograph the diversity of desert wildlife and landscapes, we’ll travel from the “woods of the Apache” in the Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge to the bizarre gypsum dunes of White Sands National Monument. In between, we’ll visit ancient petroglyphs, volcanic lava fields and one of the world’s premier astronomical radio observatories.

Photographing wildlife takes a trained eye. Our staff will teach you the subtleties of framing the unpredictable movement of birds, including sandhill cranes, snow geese and a variety of ducks.

© Nat CoalsonEqually as challenging, we’ll train you how to compose striking images of stark dune landscapes and prehistoric rock art in the most ideal light.

Here’s a glimpse of what else you can expect during Cranes, Dunes and Lava:

  • Flights of Fancy: Photograph the mass launch of snow geese and sandhill cranes as they take flight from the marshes of Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge into an untamed New Mexico sunrise.

  • Array of Images: The massive, almost-alien radio dishes seen in the movie Contact exist in bold contrast to their harsh desert setting. We’ll photograph the drama created as the sun sinks behind the National Radio Astronomy Observatory’s Very Large Array.

  • The Nature of Rock: Among a remarkable concentration of 21,000 rock-art images, the Three Rivers Petroglyph Site, dating between 900 and 1400 AD, was carved by stone tool. Today, we have the privilege of photographing the preserved etchings in their raw and organic setting.
